Student Supervision Guidelines

Dear Parents,

Thank you for being a part of our YLP community. In addition to offering great classes our goal is to build a community that is learning and growing together.

Having a cooperative effort to provide student supervision is consistent with this goal. We encourage you to take the opportunity to socialize with the other parents. For those new to homeschooling, this is an excellent opportunity to glean wisdom from seasoned homeschooling parents. It is also a great time to get to know our students. We ask you to refrain from reading, working on laptops, or phone usage while students are present, in order to provide distraction-free supervision. Please plan accordingly and clear your schedule to avoid interruptions.

Guidelines
Below are a few guidelines to help ensure the safety of our students and the educational intent of our environment.

  1. No balls, no wheels, no toy guns. Since there is no fence between our play area and busy Fallbrook Avenue we ask that there be no balls used at YLP. A child chasing a ball into the street or even a driver attempting to avoid a ball could lead to an accident. The church has a “no wheels” policy and we ask that students not use anything with wheels: bikes, skateboards, roller skates, etc. This is for the safety of our students as well as the protection of the church property. Toy guns can be risky in such a visible outdoor area and don’t seem appropriate on a church property.

  2. Students are not allowed to leave “the campus” (for example to go to nearby restaurants or stores) without being accompanied by a YLP parent. Please do not allow students to leave if they are not accompanied by their own or another YLP parent. You may be asked by students to escort them off campus. You are welcome to do so assuming there is another parent to supervise but you are under no obligation to do so.

  3. Please make sure students remain in “our area” (ask to have this explained to you if you are new to us.) There are other groups present at the church and we need to be respectful of their need to remain undisturbed. Please do not allow students to congregate in the parking lot or play on the side of the building closest to the driveway where you cannot see them.

  4. Please discourage our young girls from congregating in the foyer of the ladies room. The wall is shared by the church office staff and noisy, giggling girls disturb their work.

  5. In general we want our students to act as good guests while we are at the church. We are raising a generation of upstanding young men and women and supporting them in becoming leaders. We encourage them to behave accordingly and not to do anything that would jeopardize our being able to use the church as our YLP home. In the building we encourage walking, reasonably quiet voices, and respectful behavior. They are welcome to run and play outside in the grass area where it is unlikely to cause disturbance to our classes or other activities at the church.

  6. If you find anything on the church grounds damaged or broken please report it to me or one of the other mentors right away. We want to be sure to take responsibility for any problem we cause and take corrective action as our part in being good guests at our YLP home.

  7. Please keep your conversation with our students loving and supportive. If you need to offer correction for a problematic behavior please communicate with the child in a respectful way that indicates to him/her what the problem is and how s/he can solve it.

  8. There is a first aid kit and latex gloves in the brown cabinet in the room to the right of the stage in the Scholar Room. Please use the gloves to prevent any risk of being exposed to a blood borne illness. If an injury requires more than those supplies please let me or another mentor know immediately.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask any of our mentors.

Thank you for providing this very important role for our community.
